2013 Florida Ironman 14:26

I first came to Advanced Care Physical Therapy two years ago as a gym member.  Prior to joining the ACPT gym, I had a strained, sore back from a group workout at another gym.  I have been competing in triathlons for over twenty years and I know that I need a strong core to successfully compete. Group workouts are not for me. I took advantage of the free 30 minute session with Todd and have been training with him ever since.  Within a short time, I discovered the difference between Advanced Care Physical Therapy, Aquatics and Fitness Center as compared to other fitness organizations. ACPT has a wonderful fitness facility in addition to physical therapy services on site at the Niagara Falls location. This gave me access to state-of-the-art equipment and access to experts in the areas of functional movement and conditioning.  It turned out to be the best of both worlds.

Last November I was lucky enough to snag an entry into Ironman Florida (It sold out online in less than 1 minute) to be held on November 2, 2013. An Ironman race is the Holy Grail for tri-athletes similar to what the Boston Marathon is to runners. It consists of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, a 112-bike ride and a full marathon of 26.2 miles following the bike. It must be completed in 17 hours or less. I was thrilled at the opportunity to be part of this great challenge. I immediately got together with Todd and WE structured a strength training core routine for winter/spring and a core maintenance routine for the summer.   This approach put me in the best possible situation to be successful.

As the training intensified,   I developed some foot issues while running.  My podiatrist prescribed Physical Therapy, and all I had to do was walk over to the treatment area at ACPT to speak with Laura and Craig.  I was scheduled for an evaluation immediately and proceeded with a treatment program the exceeded my expectations. The manual care I received from the ACPT team helped me recovery from my injury.   Before I knew it, I was pain free. Laura and Craig did a fantastic job.  They got me back up and running at even a faster pace.

Then in September of this year, while training for the Ironman I crashed my bike. I hit the road hard, injuring the left side of my body primarily my shoulder. I ended up in ER with a follow up with an orthopedic specialist who immediately prescribed Physical Therapy.   At this point with only seven weeks to go, I thought my Ironman race was over. There was no question in my mind where I was going to go for Physical Therapy.  Again, it was that short walk across the hall to meet with the ACPT clinical team.   During this round of Physical Therapy, I had the pleasure of working with Kristy Frye.  She worked very hard with me to make sure I got to the Ironman. She stayed in close contact with Todd, and the three of us worked hard and smart so I could get closer to my goal of completing the Ironman.

Advanced Care Physical therapy is a great place.  It is a well equipped facility with a knowledgeable, caring and friendly staff. I am extremely grateful to them for what they did from a rehabilitative perspective and a conditioning perspective.

They were all instrumental in getting to the finish line in 14:26 and hearing the announcer say “You Are an Ironman”.  They are Ironmen and Ironwomen in my eyes.

Thank you Advanced Care Physical Therapy!
